Muñiz opens Arequipa office

Peru’s largest law firm, Estudio Muñiz, Forsyth, Ramírez, Pérez-Taiman & Luna Victoria Abogados, has opened an office in Arequipa. The new office opened its doors to business on April 4 and aims to establish closer links with clients by providing legal advisory services to the southern region of Peru, including the regions of Ica, Moquegua, Tacna, Cusco, and Madre de Dios.

Swidler Berlin partner named special adviser to Peruvian prime minister

The Peruvian-born lawyer José A Palma, founding member and former head of Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman LLP’s Latin American practice group, has been appointed special adviser to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Peru, Roberto Dañino.

US$100 million financing for Energía del Sur

The Peruvian energy company Energía del Sur SA has secured financing to the value of US$100 million from a syndicate of banks led by Citibank, NA Sucursal de Lima for the refinancing of outstanding debt, working capital and general corporate purposes. The deal closed on February 25, and disbursement was made on February 28.

Peru chooses Masons to advise on new airport at Cuzco

The Peruvian government has appointed the international firm Masons to advise on the development of the new airport of Chincheros at Cuzco, and on the country’s master concession plan for regional airports, it was announced last week. This is the first instruction in Peru for Masons, which has been building up its practice in the region.

Peru's steel giant restructures

Siderperu, the largest steel mill in Peru, has filed a global refinance agreement of its corporate debts valued at over US$100 million. The agreement was negotiated within the patrimonial restructuring procedures initiated after Siderperu filed for preventive insolvency protection under the Peruvian Patrimonial Restructuring Statute in August last year.

Decentralisation incorporated in the Constitution

On March 7, Law No. 27,680 was published, modifying the Peruvian Constitution with provisions on decentralisation, the regions and municipalities. The main substantive changes in the new law relate to the regulation of regional government structures and powers, which were not fully developed in the Constitution.

Amcham Peru launches arbitration centre

The Peruvian branch of the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham Peru) has opened up its new arbitration centre for business. The Lima-based centre started operations in February. Julio Gallo, partner at the law firm Barrios Fuentes Urquiaga Abogados, led the team of five lawyers in charge of preparing the centre’s regulations.

The Spanish yellow pages company TPI (Telefónica Publicidad e Información SA) has acquired the Telefónica directories offshoot, Telefónica del Perú SAA, for US$31.2 million.

Muñiz Forsyth advises BBVA Banco Continental on its first Peruvian ABS

The law firm Muñiz, Forsyth, Ramírez, Pérez-Taiman & Luna-Victoria has advised BBVA Banco Continental on an asset-backed securitisation (ABS) of sovereign bonds issued by the Republic of Peru, with a yield represented by the performance of the euro against the US dollar.
