IFC loan to finance upgrading of Peruvian railway

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is to grant a US$9-million loan to Ferrocarril Transandino SA, the concessionaire of Peru’s southern and south-eastern railway network. Transandino is a subsidiary of Sea Containers Ltd and local investor Peruval Corp SA.

Spanish lawyers among first international members of São Paulo Bar Association

The partner heading Cuatrecasas’ São Paulo office, Jaime Llopis, and Pablo González-Espejo, the partner in charge of Uría & Menéndez's Brazil office, are among the first international lawyers to receive the title of Consultor em Direito Estrangeiro with the São Paulo Bar Association. The appointments were announced at a ceremony held last week at the Ordem dos Advogados de São Pauloceremony.

Riotur (Empresa de Turismo do Rio de Janeiro - Rio’s tourism agency) took offence recently to an episode of the popular American TV cartoon The Simpsons. The episode, entitled ‘Blame It On Lisa’, was televised on March 31.

French company wins large water management contract

Ondéo Services has won the international bidding process for the operation and management by a private operator of the Puerto Rico water and wastewater system. Worth approximately US$4 billion, the transaction is one of the largest management contracts ever awarded for water and wastewater services.

Chilean copper producer Antofagasta Plc has announced a joint venture with Rio-based Companhia Vale Do Rio Doce (CVRD), the world’s largest producer and exporter of iron ore and pellets. An MoU (memorandum of understanding) was signed on June 5.

ICE helps Lucent expand Costa Rica's cell phone network

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (Costa Rica's state-owned power and electricity body - ICE) has made an agreement with Lucent Technologies worth US$29 million. The deal will allow Lucent to extend the coverage and capacity of its 800 MHz D-AMPS cellular system in rural regions and also to update its database of current users.
