KKR and Telefónica set up Colombian fibre optic project

US investor KKR has hired Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in Houston and Gómez-Pinzón in Bogotá to pay US$500 million for a majority stake in Telefónica Colombia’s fibre optic network, through which the two companies will establish the country’s first wholesale digital infrastructure venture.

Several firms in cross-border water merger

UK company Waterlogic has enlisted Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in London and New York, DLA Piper Martínez Beltrán in Bogotá, NLD Abogados in Santiago and McConnell Valdés LLC in San Juan to acquire Quality Water Service’s (QWS) operations in Chile, Colombia and Puerto Rico.

Deloitte Legal in Guatemala City has strengthened its corporate and M&A offering by hiring Ruby Asturias from Latin Lawyer 250 firm EY Law (Guatemala), in the same month that the firm also added a labour partner in Argentina.

Poor political will plagues anti-corruption efforts in Latin America

A study by the Vance Center’s Lawyers Council for Civil and Economic Rights has revealed that several anti-corruption agencies in Latin America lack sufficient independence from government powers to operate effectively, while the absence of political will to fight white-collar crime is dragging the region behind in its anti-corruption efforts.
