Biography

Mauricio Halpern has been a partner of DLA Piper Chile since 2020. Since 2017, he has been working as counsel for the firm, and before that he worked as a corporate general counsel for the supermarket chain SMU SA between 2015 and 2017. He was an executive legal manager at the Australian energy company Pacific Hydro Chile between 2011 and 2015 and between 2010 and 2011 he was a senior associate at Bahamondez, Alvarez & Zegers (BAZ), the predecessor firm to DLA Piper Chile. In 2009, as a Fulbright scholar, he studied an LLM at the University of Pennsylvania and then worked as a foreign law clerk for the firm Clifford Chance in Washington DC, United States in the area of project finance.

Mauricio Halpern has concentrated his practice in corporate law, with special emphasis in finance law, capital markets and compliance matters, advising various high-profile foreign and domestic clients in a wide range of structured transactions, corporate and project financing (eg, energy and infrastructure) and lending sphere products. As in-house counsel, he heads the IPO process and some debt bond issuances. 

Considering his unique “both sides of the desk” knowledge, Mauricio has been co-chairing the compliance and risk management practice of the firm, supporting our clients not only developing and implementing regulatory compliance models and structures, but also producing policies, procedures, fraud report “hot-lines”, risk matrixes and control score-cards, providing them with best practices and high market standards.

Other matters in which he has actively participated, have been in strategic advice to boards of directors and senior management of public and closed corporations, both local and foreign, in addition to collaborating in corporate restructuring processes, dispute resolution and complex negotiation among shareholders.

Halpern is a member of the Chilean Bar Association.
