Work areas

This firm is highly recommended for services in the following work areas.

Although Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP has only existed in its current format for a handful of years, its two predecessor firms – Hunton & Williams LLP and Andrews Kurth Kenyon LLP – have a much longer experience in Latin America going back decades.

Hunton & Williams, which has roots in Richmond, Virginia, brought experience advising Spanish clients with operations in Miami on their activities in Latin America to the mix, as well as offshore private banking work on behalf of Spanish banks. Texas-headquartered Andrews Kurth added talent in Houston and Washington, DC, as well as partners with significant experience working in Mexico, with good knowledge of oil and gas, renewables and electricity transmission.

The combined firm is strongest in corporate and banking and finance work, where it is most visible representing multilaterals like IDB Invest. Its long history of working with development banks makes it a natural fit on the kinds of sustainable investment deals Latin America is seeing more and more of, and indeed the firm has helped the region break new ground in that respect. On behalf of IDB, it was notably involved in a bond issuance tied to gender equality-focused goals in Colombia, which marked a world-first for that type of debt instrument. Through its growing banking and finance practice, it is doing more and more capital markets work in the region.

Hunton Andrews Kurth also has specialist knowledge of telecoms and the firm’s arbitration and white-collar crime groups have experience in the region. Lawyers do compliance and regulatory sanctions work, particularly concerning Cuba and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) penalties.

As a 1,000-lawyer outfit with 15 offices in the US and five overseas, partners here say geographical spread and the sheer number of lawyers at Hunton Andrews Kurth appeals to banks, who are attracted by rates that can be more affordable because lawyers are spread throughout the US, as opposed to solely being in New York.

Hunton Andrews Kurth has long taken a refreshingly simple attitude towards client service: assemble a team of talented lawyers who concentrate on providing high-quality advice to clients. This straightforwardness is appreciated by customers, with whom the firm has built long-lasting institutional relationships.

Miami represents the core of the Latin American practice, but there are also relevant practitioners in Houston, Washington, DC, New York and London.
