Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga

Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga enjoys a well-established reputation for trustworthiness and a prestigious client base, built upon the shoulders of internationally renowned founder, professor Eduardo Jiménez de Aréchaga, and more than 78 years of high-quality, personalised and dedicated service.

A full-service provider, Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga, is the result of the 2001 merger between Jiménez de Aréchaga & Brause and Estudio Hector A Viana, a merger that combined the banking, financial and corporate fields of the former with the strong litigation practice of the latter. Almost two decades after that merger, Jiménez de Aréchaga is widely recognised as a leader in the Uruguayan legal market.

To continue to enhance client service, Jiménez de Aréchaga, Viana & Brause and Dentons approved their merger in September of 2019. The merger launched during the second quarter of 2020. This positions Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga as the largest global law firm in Uruguay from launch, connecting clients to top-tier legal talent in Latin America and the Caribbean and to more than 12,000 lawyers around the globe.

Main areas of practice

Arbitration and litigation: Since our practice covers matters of almost all sectors of the economy, our litigation work is diverse. It includes all phases of preparation, trial and appellate litigation of actions in all courts. In addition, we are regularly involved in local and international arbitration cases. Worth noting is the Pluna restructuring that won the Restructuring Deal of the Year awarded by Latin Lawyer in 2017.

Banking and finance: The firm enjoys a dominant presence in the Uruguayan financial community, advising the most relevant players in the market. It has a strong capital markets practice, having participated in many of the most prominent recent deals, including issuances of debt securities, future-flows securitisations, project bonds and financial trust vehicles of consumer loans.

Corporate/M&A: The firm’s international corporate and M&A practice has placed its lawyers at the centre of the most complex and challenging transactions in Uruguay. The transactional work includes mergers, spin-offs, stock purchases and transfers of assets, and is usually interrelated with the labour and tax practices.

Project finance, energy, oil and gas, natural resources, agribusiness: The firm is second-to-none in a new wave of project finance transactions that have taken centre stage in the Uruguayan market, especially in the energy sector. The firm has already participated in the project financing of 15 wind farms. It is also in the driving seat in the surge of public–private partnerships, having participated in the first two PPP projects in Uruguay’s history, which included the first-ever issuance of project bonds in Uruguay, and the first financing granted by an infrastructure fund sponsored by CAF.

Labour and employment: The firm’s well-regarded labour department represents employers in matters involving all aspects of work relations; contracts, collective bargaining, employment litigation, outsourcing, employment compensation and social security.

Tax and accounting: Our tax and accounting practice gives support to our business practice, in as much as tax issues associated with business organisation planning, foreign investments, free zones and offshore activities arise.
