Latin Lawyer 250 methodology

The Latin Lawyer 250 is based both on our deep knowledge of the region and its legal markets over decades, and in-depth current research undertaken throughout the year, every year. Every effort has been made to ensure that the information contained in the Latin Lawyer 250 is accurate and up to date, and that the analysis reflects the current state of the legal market in each country covered.

For more than 20 years we have been examining legal practitioners operating in Latin America and canvassing their clients. Direct research involving interviews with clients and law firms has been conducted in all 18 Latin American countries covered, as well as in the United States, Canada, Asia and Europe, while thousands of questionnaires have been returned by corporate counsel, who receive complimentary online access to the directory for assisting in this research via the Latin American Corporate Counsel Association website. The deals and cases submitted to Latin Lawyer throughout the year have been combed through to establish the firms’ expertise and track record. All in all, we believe that more research has gone into this survey has ever been done on the Latin American legal market.

Based on this research, we have felt able to select the firms included in the guide and highlight their key areas of expertise. Numbers of lawyers and partners have been provided and verified by the firms themselves; we asked all firms to furnish us with a list of individual lawyers to back up the numbers they supplied, and any resulting discrepancies must be laid at their door.

For the first time this year, the Latin Lawyer 250 will present leading Latin American law firms in three distinct categories that draw upon our decades-long research and understanding of the markets we write about: Elite, Highly Recommended and Recommended. Within each category, law firms are ordered alphabetically by name.

Elite firms have each carved out their own paths towards excellence and demonstrate unique areas of strength. The firms recognised here lead the way in their respective markets for the superior work they do for clients. They also invest significant time and effort in maintaining their competitive edge, through astute business development and careful talent management. The result is a list of firms at the forefront of their respective markets, with each bringing successful, innovative strategies and experiences to the table. Latin Lawyer Elite focuses on the region’s largest jurisdictions – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela – as well as Panama and the Central American region.

Our overriding aim with the Highly Recommended section is to identify those firms whose services would be of benefit to international clients and sophisticated Latin American companies. In line with that, these firms have an established international client base, sufficient resources to respond rapidly in complex transactions, an awareness of the requirements of international clients and the language skills – primarily in English – necessary for effective communication with international clients. In each country featured, the criterion for selection was the same: acknowledged excellence in providing legal services to large corporations, local and international, in one or more areas. In some countries, only a handful of firms satisfied this test; in others, the legal market was much more fragmented, with more boutique specialists.

In Recommended, we identify and profile a broad range of law firms, including boutique and multi-disciplinary firms offering advice on cross-border deals, as well as those focused on domestic transactions with wider geographic coverage and deep local knowledge. We include firms that provide cost-effective repeat services alongside those concentrating on high-value strategic advice and covers a wider range of cities and states. Each entrant has demonstrable strength in its core practice areas. They have all been acknowledged as a leader in a particular market, be it their home city or state, or nationwide. In some countries, we identified firms that meet our criteria in multiple locations, while in others, the legal market remains concentrated in the country’s capital city.

The Latin Lawyer 250 also includes a selection of the best consultancy firms offering support and highly valued expertise while working closely with law firms and clients in a variety of complex legal proceedings in Latin America. In line with the high standards of the Latin Lawyer 250, the research process to produce the selection of consultancy firms has been equally rigorous and with a similar methodology.

This edition has been fully revised and updated to reflect developments during the past year; the audience will find some new firms in our listings, while some are no longer listed.

Finally, it is important to point out that in accordance with Law Business Research’s established policy, inclusion in this publication is based solely on recommendations by fellow legal professionals and clients and on careful scrutiny of current client lists. No firm has been able to secure a place in the Latin Lawyer 250 by any other means or to affect its editorial content.
