Brazil’s Unifique Telecomunicações has relied on White & Case LLP in São Paulo and local law firm Machado Meyer Advogados to raise 818 million reais (US$157 million) in an initial public offering on the B3 stock exchange.

Deal of the Year Winner: Banking & Finance

When the covid-19 pandemic grounded the global travel industry, the subsequent financial strain caused Latin American aviation companies to drop off the radar one by one. Regional aviation group LATAM Airlines obtained a US$2.45 billion DIP financing from a group of international shareholders, creditors and lenders several months after the airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in New York in May 2020. This lifeline wins the banking & finance category of our Deal of the Year Awards.

When emergency financing promised by state-led development bank BNDES missed the mark, Brazilian airline Azul had to think fast to source alternative funding. The result was a US$325 million convertible debt deal, a sophisticated form of capital markets transaction not commonly seen in Latin America. It is our capital markets Deal of the Year.

The combined project bond issuance and bank debt package was one of Latin America’s largest power project financings in 2020 and occurred over two concurrent cross-border transactions.
