Biography
João Carlos Areosa is a PhD candidate in civil procedural law from Faculdade de Direito do Estado de São Paulo (FADUSP), holds an LLM degree from the University of Chicago Law School, a master’s degree in civil procedural law from Faculdade de Direito da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP), and an LLB from Faculdade de Direito da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). He also specialises in corporate law and capital markets from Faculdade de Direito of Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV).
Mr Areosa has 15 years of experience representing clients in complex commercial and corporate disputes before Brazilian federal and state courts and in arbitration proceedings (domestic and international) since he is trained in both civil and common law. Mr Areosa also represents clients before the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission and the Central Bank of Brazil.
In addition, Mr Areosa coordinates the Corporate Law and Capital Markets: Material and Procedural Law course of the Lawyers Association of São Paulo (AASP). He also speaks in postgraduation courses and conferences. Mr Areosa frequently publishes book chapters and journal articles.
Mr Areosa is listed as arbitrator in several Brazilian arbitration chambers. He is member of the Arbitrators list of the Agribusiness Arbitration and Mediation Chamber (CAMAGRO), and also member of the Brazilian Arbitration Committee, Brazilian Bar Association (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo), Lawyers Association of São Paulo and Brazilian Private Law Institute.
