Alessandri was founded in 1893 by Arturo Alessandri Palma, two-time President of Chile (1920–1925 and 1932–1938), and for five generations has provided not only important achievements for its clients but also for the country’s public service.
The firm is composed of over 50 professionals in different specialties and generations who graduated from the most prestigious schools and universities in the country and abroad.
The vision of a professional performance, both demanding and of excellence, has led not only to invaluable achievements in the local private and legal areas, but has also transpired into work committed to social development of the country, which is reflected in the firm’s active involvement with the Chilean Bar Association and the Legal Aid Agency (Servicio de Asistencia Judicial), and our permanent pro bono services to a number of institutions as well as low-income and vulnerable individuals.
Our corporate practice aims at providing a full service to multinationals and private equity firms wishing to do business in Chile. Indeed, our range of services covers transactional matters, M&A, joint ventures, corporate financing and restructuring, labour, tax, environmental and regulatory, with a strong focus on financial services, insurance, public procurement and concessions, pharmaceuticals and natural resources. Our clients include industrial (energy, construction materials, mining, pharma, beverage, transport, aviation, etc) as well as global investment banks, asset managers and private equity firms wishing to raise capital and invest in Chile. Our capital markets practice advises international financial services firms, including registered and alternative asset managers, investment banks, brokerage houses, insurance companies and credit rating agencies.
Alessandri’s competition practice is an emerging leading team in the field and is renowned for its international focus. Our lawyers bring together decades of experience in a full range of competition work – including cartel and abuse of dominance procedures, as well as the former voluntary merger control regime – representing clients before Chile’s Competition Authority, and in contentious and non-contentious proceedings before the Competition Tribunal.
In the dispute resolution practice, the firm aims to replicate our strong presence in domestic arbitration in the international arena. The profile of a relevant section of the firm’s clients makes it necessary to strengthen the international dispute resolution service, as today a large part of the contracts between companies of different countries include international arbitration clauses.
Alessandri’s intellectual property area’s high prestige is based on a highly qualified team of lawyers and advisers with different specialisation. We advise our clients on the renewal of trademarks, domain names and vigilance in all aspects, and on the protection of copyright in literary, musical, cinematographic, scientific and technological work. Regarding invention patents, we have specialists in areas such as engineering, mechanics and biochemistry, to advise mining, pharmaceutical and biotechnical companies, among others. We consult and advise on issues of transfer of technology, including licences, franchises and know-how contracts, and we furthermore have an extensive network of correspondent attorneys around the world, which allows us to support the globalisation of our domestic clients.
As the growth of construction projects is strategic for Chile, and goes hand in hand with economic growth, innovation and the creation of new technologies, in 2018 Alessandri opened a new practice area and integrated a strong team construction law specialist that will cover their three areas of expertise: construction law, real estate law and dispute resolution. This team has advised and represented owners and contractors in several of the most important projects in the mining, energy and infrastructure sector in Chile and in the region.
