Baker & McKenzie to advise Paraguayan government in privatisation process

The government of Paraguay has awarded the offices of Baker & McKenzie in Santiago (Cruzat, Otúzar & Mackenna), Buenos Aires and Chicago the contract to advise in the privatisation of the state telecommunications operator ANTELCO and the state sanitation service corporation CORPOSANA.

Nicholson y Cano advises Impsat on US$33-million deal

Impsat Fiber Networks, Inc, a provider of broadband telecommunications and data centre services in Latin America, has signed a three-year, US$33-million contract with Lucent Technologies to purchase advanced optical networking equipment. Impsat plans to use the technology to expand the capacity of its pan-Latin American broadband network in Argentina and Brazil.

Beccar Varela advises energy distributor in US$49 million floating rate notes

Edemsa SA, a major distributor of electricity in the Argentine province of Mendoza, has closed an offering of US$49 million in floating rate notes under the US$150-million EMTN Programme. The deal was closed on July 12, 2001.

The closing date was on June 25, 2001.

Tozzini, Freire launches research award

Brazilian firm Tozzini, Freire, Teixeira e Silva Advogados has launched a new award for the best legal research paper written by a law student or recent graduate. Eligibility for the award, the first of its kind in Brazil, will be limited to students currently enrolled in the final year of law school and those who have graduated in the last three years from an officially accredited law school in Brazil. The closing date for entries is October 15, 2001.
