Paul Hastings has made good on Brazil expansion plans, says Fitzgerald

Paul Hastings LLP’s Latin America practice group head Michael Fitzgerald is bullish about Brazil’s growth prospects and says the double lateral hire from Shearman & Sterling LLP’s São Paulo office last week fulfils long-standing expansion plans.

Paul Hastings has made good on Brazil expansion plans, says Fitzgerald Michael Fitzgerald, Jonathan Kellner & David Flechner

Following the surprise hires, Fitzgerald told Latin Lawyer in a follow-on interview that the firm had been looking to expand its base in Brazil for some time. Under former office head Roberta Bassegio and partner Steven Sandretto, São Paulo operations were primarily focused on capital markets and banking and finance transactions. That’s now complemented by the addition of Shearman partners Jonathan Kellner and David Flechner, who have strong M&A and project finance practices, he says. “Together with Steven, they will form a strong and deep team in Brazil, and with these new practice areas we can enhance our portfolio of services in addition to our already established practices.”
