Firms and lawyers react to J&F lawsuit

The lawsuit filed on 10 April by J&F Investimentos against Brazilian law firm Trench, Rossi e Watanabe Advogados and its international association firm Baker McKenzie LLP adds another chapter to a scandal that shook Brazil and almost led President Michel Temer to step down less than one year into his mandate.

J&F’s lawsuit claims Trench Rossi in 2017 hired a senior prosecutor from Brazil’s General Prosecutor’s Office, Marcello Miller, and allowed him to begin work for J&F before he had left his job as a prosecutor. According to the suit filed before the District of Columbia superior court, this has undermined the company’s 10.3 billion reais (US$3.2 billion) leniency agreement with Brazilian authorities and its negotiations with the US Department of Justice (DoJ). In the document, J&F says “several of its officers and directors are now at risk of criminal prosecution and even possibly imprisonment.”
