Uruguay makes history with digital currency pilot project

Guyer & Regules and Ferrere (Uruguay) have worked on a deal that sees Uruguay’s central bank (BCU) adopt an electronic version of its own currency, becoming the first country in history to do so.

Swiss currency printer The Roberto Giori Company, creator of the e-peso, turned to Guyer & Regules, while US tech company In-Switch, which developed the platform and technology for the pilot project, called upon Ferrere. IBM rendered hosting, distribution and control services and relied on its in-house counsel.
