BankBoston buys ABN AMRO retail business in Chile

ABN AMRO Bank N has sold its retail business in Chile to BankBoston, NA. The transaction, which involved a bidding process, due diligence procedures and contract terms negotiations, was closed on November 14.

By means of Resolution No. 026-2001-CDS-INDECOPI, published in the official gazette ‘El Peruano’ on November 14, the Dumping and Subsides Control Committee of INDECOPI (the National Institute for the Defence of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property Rights) established the application of provisional dumping duties in respect of the importation of certain types of zippers of Chinese origin. The antidumping duties are applied over the FOB value of such imports.

IFC helps Andrade Gutierrez

Andrade Gutierrez Concessões S/A is to be given extra equity capital by International Finance Corporation (IFC) to provide for new infrastructure investments in addition to working capital needed for project identification and development. The deal, which closed on November 5, is worth up to US$30 million.

Italian energy company acquires stake in Camuzzi Group

ENEL has acquired 40 per cent of the Camuzzi Group from its controlling shareholder, the Rotterdam-based holding company Mill-Hill. ENEL - 69 per cent owned by the Italian state - is both a generator and distributor of electricity and a telecommunications group. The Camuzzi Group is one of the largest privately-owned Italian companies engaged in the provision of public utilities in Italy and Argentina.

Foreign investors' rights upheld by Federal Courts

The Spanish Group Fomento de Contratas y Construcciones SA (FCC) has successfully obtained a ruling against the decision of the authorities of the City of Avellaneda to call a tender for the collection of refuse. The city authorities planned to issue a request for a proposal containing certain clauses that would have precluded FCC and other foreign bidders from making a tender offer. The ruling was handed down by the Federal Court sitting in La Plata, Buenos Aires.
