Same-sex marriage was legalised in Mexico City in 2009 thanks to a 30-year campaign, but it didn’t have a huge impact nationwide given the country’s federal make-up. Across the rest of Mexico, progress was far slower until Mendez demonstrated in his home state of Oaxaca how the recurso de amparo process could be used to make same-sex marriage legal. He began his work in 2011 when he was a student, representing several same-sex couples seeking to marry in Oaxaca. He won one couple’s case two years later.
