Early mover

Two decades after becoming one of the first lawyers from a major US firm to make São Paulo his home, Don Baker remains very much at the forefront of Brazil’s transactional work – so much so that he is Latin Lawyer’s 2017 International Lawyer of the Year. Vincent Manancourt reports

Early mover

Among top-tier US firms, a presence in São Paulo is no longer the distinguishing feature it once was. Even so, White & Case LLP’s office in the city is more established than most. That is largely thanks to Don Baker, who heads the firm’s Latin American practice. He relocated to São Paulo in the late 1990s and, of the international legal community, is arguably the most wedded to the country. His wife, who he met years before the move, is Brazilian and they have raised a family in the city.
